Deshi Senior Center
This mural was painted in collaboration with Danielle Mastrion with the assistance of Adam Bishop, for the Deshi Senior Center in Ozone Park, Queens, August 2018.
To research for the design of the mural, we interviewed the members of the center and worked with them to conceptualize a mural that captures the essence of family that members get from participating in the center’s program. The mural shows seniors of Bengali, Indian and Guyanese descent (the majority demographic of the seniors that use the center) smiling and enjoying the activities that the center offers: yoga, Zumba, Sudoku, bingo, cards, and coloring. The center hopes that the mural will encourage other seniors in the community that may be suffering from depression or loneliness to come inside and connect with others. A portion of the mural was painted by the seniors themselves during a community paint day.
