Finished mural for Amazonarte 4 in Pucallpa, Peru, #amazonarte4, dedicated to the Nahua community of Ucayali. After forced contact with westerners in the 1950s, the Nahua lost half of its population to disease. Today, the Nahua and the ecosystem they depend on are in serious risk due to expanding mining, logging, gas and oil extraction projects in their territories. More than 80% of the population have tested positive for mercury poisoning from an unknown source. This mural examines the values we place on Black gold, red gold, precious metals, and natural gas at the cost of human life, health, clean water, and biodiversity. This mural calls for the Peruvian government and health officials to Conduct testing to find the source of the mercury poisoning, and for governments across the world to hold extraction companies accountable for the consequences of their activities, advocate for your people and fight to protect your land.

I want to send a very heartfelt thank you to the organizers, artists, and sponsors of Amazonarte who made this experience so meaningful and special. You could really feel the heart that was put into this project and the fierce pride in peru’s rich cultural and gastronomical diversity and the desire to share this with the world. Deep gratitude to @zelva_1, @ximenamil and Ridan Alzamora Manosalva for inviting me to be a part of this beautiful team and for their hard work in making this project a reality. Big big big thank you to Our gracious hosts Mr and Mrs Lisbinio, Alpha Tours @casaandina and Costa del Sol Hotel, the amazing team of chefs that put so much love into each meal and shared their gastronomy and laughter with us each day @agasu.pucallpa. A special thank you to my amazing assistant Cristopher Reyna Choque who kept me laughing through fever, hives, sun burn, ant bites, and sleep deprivation. And last but not least, a huge hug to all of the talented artists that participated in this event. It was a big honor to paint alongside such amazing human beings and learn from each of you. This was an experience that I will never forget and I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it <3

Mural terminado para @amazonarteperu #amazonarte4, dedicado a la cultura originaria Nahua. Después del contacto forzado con los occidentales en la década de 1950, los nahuas perdieron la mitad de su población debido a enfermedades. Hoy en día, los nahuas y el ecosistema del que dependen corren un grave riesgo debido a la expansión de los proyectos de minería,la explotación forestal, gas y petróleo en sus territorios. Más del 80% de la población ha dado positivo por intoxicación por mercurio de una fuente desconocida. Este mural examina los valores que colocamos sobre el oro negro, el oro rojo, los metales preciosos y el gas natural a costa de la vida humana, la salud, el agua potable y la biodiversidad. Este mural requiere que el gobierno peruano y los funcionarios de salud realicen las pruebas necesarias para encontrar la fuente del envenenamiento por mercurio y que los gobiernos de todo el mundo responsabilicen a las empresas de extracción por las consecuencias de sus actividades, aboguen por su gente y luchen para proteger su tierra.

Quiero enviar un sincero agradecimiento a los organizadores, artistas y auspiciantes de Amazonarte que hicieron que esta experiencia fuera tan significativa y especial. Realmente podría sentir el corazón que se puso en este proyecto y el orgullo feroz de la rica diversidad cultural y gastronómica de Perú. Un profundo agradecimiento a Zelva Uno Ximena Mil y @Ridan art por invitarme a ser parte de este hermoso equipo y por su arduo trabajo para hacer que este proyecto sea una realidad. Big big big gracias a nuestros amables anfitriones, el Sr. y la Sra. Lisbinio, Alpha Tours @casaandina y Costa del Sol Hotel, el increíble equipo de chefs @agasu.pucallpa que prepararon cada comida con tanto amor y compartieron su gastronomía y su amistad con nosotros. Un agradecimiento especial a mi asombroso asistente, Cristopher Reyna Choque, quien me hizo reír por la fiebre, las colmenas, la quemadura del sol, las picaduras de hormigas y la cansancia. Y finalmente, un abrazo enorme a todos los artistas que participaron y brindaron su arte y su energía. Fue un honor pintar al lado de grandes capos como ustedes y aprender de sus procesos!
